Horses Respond to Authentic Leadership
Horses have been our companions for thousands of years - providing transportation, winning battles, plowing fields - and in all that time only a few people have discovered one of the truly remarkable characteristics of horses - they are nature's leadership barometers. The survival of a herd is directly related to the quality of leadership within it - so from the day they are born horses seek and test for strong leadership - from each other and from us. The herd leader must demonstrate alertness, clear intention, and strong self worth. Horse leaders know how to balance conflicting priorities - how to give clear direction without causing fear, how to inspire trust and respect, how to balance the needs of the individual with the needs of the group.
Successfully working with horses requires the use of the same skills necessary for success in the business world - empathy, communication, task analysis, planning, collaboration, appreciation, gap analysis, problem solving, clearly defined goals, self responsibility, adaptability, mutual trust, continuous learning, shared leadership and more – which means that skills learned with horses can be immediately applied back at the office.
Horses Respond to Effective Teamwork
Horses are herd animals and experts in “team dynamics”. The horse will exploit any perceived weakness in the team – but once the team starts to work effectively the horses behaviour will visibly shift. Horses are all unique individuals – and teams learn that just as one strategy may work for one customer but not another similarly they may need to adjust strategies to accommodate the needs of horses with differing temperaments.
Horses Provide Immediate Feedback
Horses provide a “living laboratory” where individuals and teams can test changes in leadership style and receive instant feedback. As behaviour changes the horse’s response changes– confirming positive changes the moment it happens – this instant positive feedback significantly increasing learning.
Horses Make Learning Memorable
In a contest between a 1200 lb animal and powerpoint slides - the horses win every time. Using horses to illustrate leadership concepts definately makes the program memorable. Participants are fully engaged in the activities of the day – they aren’t thinking about “to do” lists back at the office.

What our clients have to say:
“The most important lesson for participants is that they need to build a relationship with the horse deliberately –the individual has to overcome some measure of anxiety, learn about another’s realities, patiently develop a trust level and then find sufficient self control and self discipline to be able to transfer influence. “
“Confronting a 1000 pound horse can be intimidating and so making progress in building a working relationship with that horse is convincing evidence that the participant is doing something right. The horses have no political agenda and so the lessons are crystal clear and the outcomes are incontrovertible.”
“ With the horse, since they have no verbal skills, we are forced to pay attention to both their body language and our own. We tend to think of verbal as being 100% of our communication, but of course much of it is really body language and the context. This program makes you realize how unaware we are of the subtleties. “
“Because you’re learning with horses, there is a greater opportunity for breakthrough. Everyone is doing this for the first time together, so you feel more able to experiment and more open to new ideas. I thought I knew horses pretty well, but I learned so much – you don’t know what you don’t know.”
“We learned to lead the horse without whips, reins or lead ropes. On the job, that’s about making authentic connections with people – then they will follow you. Horses and people know when you are being authentic."
